Choirs from Concordia University will join Grace’s Parish Choir and brass ensemble in a hymn festival celebrating the music of composer and hymnody scholar Carl Schalk. The music begins at 4pm on Sunday, October 17, in the Grace sanctuary.

Schalk, who passed away in January 2021, was a noted church music scholar and composer of hymns and choir anthems. He taught music at Concordia University Chicago, was a longtime Grace member, and served Grace for many years as Assistant Director of Music. He and Paul Bouman founded the Bach Cantata Vespers Ministry in 1971.

The concert is part of Concordia’s annual Lectures in Church Music. The program includes hymns and anthems composed by Schalk, including hymn concertatos such as “O Day Full of Grace” that are especially familiar to Lutheran congregations.

All are invited to the in-person program at Grace. It will also be available on livestream.
