“Shaped Into The Rock”
In Matthew 16 Jesus asked the disciples who people say that he is. Even now we might give lots of different answers. Peter’s answer is different: Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. The one who comes all the way down to us and shares in our death and raise us to new life. Jesus calls us to follow beyond ourselves. Not even all the forces of evil will be able to thwart a community shaped by this word.

“Tired in Sidon”
Our gospel reading tells of a Canaanite woman whose daughter is tormented by a demon. The disciples seek to dismiss her and Jesus agrees, but she doesn’t relent. In this, we are reminded that the One who was rejected and forsaken, Jesus himself, has become enough for the whole world. God’s crumbs would be enough, but in God’s mercy the meal is transformed into a feast.

“Unburied Treasure”
From mustard seeds and yeast to pearls and fish, Jesus proclaims the surprisingly expansive nature of God’s Kingdom. We dare not judge a book by its cover or a seed by its size. God is up to amazing things. The key to these parables, though, is perhaps the one hiding in the middle: The Kingdom is like treasure buried in a field. The heart of the gospel is not that God can make big things out of small; it is that God makes life out of death.
