Sermon

“Coal Calling”
Luke 5:1-11; Isaiah 6:1-13

What would happen if you suddenly found yourself face to face with God? One thing is certain: Nothing would ever be the same. Today, we are transported to the heavenly throne room with Isaiah. With the prophet, we are overwhelmed by what we see and hear. It’s more than Isaiah can take in; he knows that death is the fate of those who dare to look upon God’s face. He is aware of his sin; he knows he doesn’t belong. Today, we stand on Galilee’s shore with Simon Peter and his partners. There, in the midst of their daily routine, God comes to them. Jesus looks them in the face, calls them to new work along new shores. Where they can see only paucity, Jesus works abundance. Isaiah is purified with fiery coal. Simon is given new nets for a different kind of fishing. Brought face to face with God, they are moved from death in all its forms to the life that comes from the Lord alone. Called to discipleship, everything changes.
