Sermon
“Ready or Not, the Spirit Descends”
John 14:8-17, 25-27
The Holy Spirit did not wait for them to be ready. The Father and the Son didn’t send the Spirit to a people who were already bold, courageous, and faithful. The Spirit was poured out on the fiftieth day to the disciples who were still huddled in hiding. The Spirit-filled disciples go forth into a world even less ready to receive the gospel. Neither the disciples nor the crowds were ready. The Spirit came anyway. Today, we live in a world still marked by sin, marred by death. We are not always bold, courageous, or faithful. Still we cry out, “Come, Holy Spirit!” And still the Spirit comes. Send us we pray, Holy Spirit, into this world, to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to all flesh, all people, in all places.
