Prayer of the Day

O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Sermon

“Stop Making Sense”
Luke 24:1-12

The women were prepared for death. While they found no joy in it, death made sense. What they weren’t prepared for was messengers in dazzling clothes who shared the strangest news: He who was crucified is not here, but has risen. They go, these first preachers of the resurrection, and tell the disciples. But the eleven dismiss the story out of hand. Jesus alive? No more than an idle tale, pure nonsense. By human wisdom and experience, of course, they’re right. It doesn’t make sense. But in this world where sin, suffering, evil, and death are commonplace, perhaps what we truly need is some divine nonsense. In God’s upending of this world’s ways, death is undone. Why, how, would God do such a thing for us? Being sensible has never gotten us very far. Thank God for the nonsense of the resurrection, for Christ in whom all things are being made new, and for joy that transcends all understanding.
